8 - WORSHIP in TICKHILL

Until its decline in the late 20th century, religion has always played a prominent role in people’s lives giving moral structure and a sense of discipline. Church and chapel became the heart of every community offering spiritual, educational and social guidance and welfare.  Until the Reformation, worship followed the rites of the Roman Catholic church, but Henry VIII’s break with Rome in 1534 heralded the formal establishment of the Church of England and later the foundation of many diverse ‘non-conformist’ groups; in the Tickhill area, there have been places of worship reflecting these changes for over twelve hundred years.
