One of the factors which determine a town’s prosperity is trade. Tickhill has experienced mixed fortunes over the centuries: it flourished during the medieval period but its subsequent decline in the late 14th century was to last for almost 400 years. The arrival of a new class of trader - the shopkeeper - in the early 19th century reflected and contributed to a revival in its status as a prosperous market town.
