14 - INNS, BEERHOUSES and OFF-LICENCES

The inn has been at the heart of a community since Roman times and over the centuries has featured prominently in English literature from Chaucer to Dickens. Inns provided food, lodging and stabling; like trading establishments they have contributed to the generation of economic growth and employment and were instrumental in a town’s prosperity.  For centuries they have reflected changes in society from the drunkenness and abandonment of the 18th century, through temperance and sobriety of the 19th century, to the affluent society and attitude to women in the late 20th century.
